That an anecdote at a party could be just as easily Truman as Hoffman. Part of this is due to the fact that Hoffman improvised much of his cocktail party chatter. It allows him the room to get into Capote.
I didn't know that. Interesting. Certainly Hoffman worked particularly hard on getting into this role as he made clear when I heard him speak at the NYFF. This thread illustrates my point that the star turn sucks the air out of the movie because everybody's talking here mostly about the performance, perfs and noms. Not a movie, hardly, at all. That's a shame. That it happened, I mean.
There are no childhood flashbacks to Truman the abused, or bewildered child, there is no "now I'm a genius" moments.
True, and thank the Lord for that. But nevertheless Ray isn't just a better biopic, but a better movie.
Capote implies with a degree of subtlety that the novel's title is applicable to both the massacre and the state-sanctioned death of the murderous duo.
