    Secondhand reaction

I haven't seen it yet. My friend Olaf says,

"adorable. Watch eight of France's most gorgeous actresses being celebrated in Ozon's hommage to womankind. A pure pleasure."

Now I have seen 8 Women myself and I'm not too jazzed. Although I appreciate any attempt to revive the musical genre, I didn't think many of the musical numbers were well written or performed ... I did like "Ne pas vivre seul."
I agree with the person who wrote that the extremely caricatural nature of it all is not meant to be taken seriously ... however, while I don't think the fact that it's a "women's film" (whatever that means) implies a feminist responsibility, it's kind of annoying to see the same tired cliches being trotted out, isn't it?
That said, it's worth the price of admission to see Fanny Ardant take off her coat when she starts singing "A quoi sert de vivre libre." Wow.

P.S. Fun intertexuality ... including lots of visual references to that Jane Wyman/Rock Hudson movie about the widow and the gardener.
