    Suzuki & the Quays

Two films I saw at the 24th VIFF are on DVD and I picked them both up yesterday:
    Seijun Suzuki's Princess Raccoon
Quay Bros' Piano Tuner of Earthquakes.

I never thought I'd see them both at HMV, but there they were: $56 CDN in total. Those 2 films made a big impression on me at that festival. Piano Tuner is released by Zeitgeist Films, PR by Ah Mei.

I'm so glad these are finally on dvd.

Suzuki's hyper-stylized, unabashedly theatrical musical combines elements of Japanese folk legends, Snow White, and Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet". The music and choreography borrow from everywhere. The calypso number is unforgettable!

The Quays seem to have used "The Phantom of the Opera" as a mere point of departure, then take you places you've never been before. The set design is absolutely amazing.
