Great reviews Chris. Top-notch stuff as always..
In reference to Captain America: CIVIL WAR, I know why the fanboys are all stoked about it, but yeah, it's muddled. Just like the previous one The Winter Soldier, it's almost incoherent, soulless. But sweet Jesus is it jam-packed with mindless comic book violence! Fanboys love the CGI and just seeing these characters onscreen. I wish they'd work on the writing a bit more, but it's comic book stuff. How serious can you make it? The best examples are The Dark Knight trilogy and Watchmen. Rock-solid serious treatments/statements. The Marvel films to me are great entertainment, nothing more. Iron Man and Thor may be a cut above Captain America. The first movie was excellent (The First Avenger) but they really had nothing lined up to be a sequel- they had to make it up on the fly, like Avengers: Age of Ultron, which I hate. What a letdown. These films are muddled, and more care should be taken to maybe make classics? Is it so hard? I don't think so. We have great examples from cinema's past to "set the bar". You're just ripping the audience off otherwise.
