WAITING FOR THE BARBARIANS/EN ATTENDANT LES BARBARES (Eugène Green 2017)

American expatriate Green (in France since he came in 1968, at age 23) is a noted master of performance practices of French Baroque theatre, and methods of elocution, also an amiable curmudgeon given to silly wordplay and strongly opposed to most things modern, and to Americans. This is a workshop in his stilted Bressonian style made into a coherent film about vanquishing tyrants, dealing with contemporary distractions, and being homeless, or a "bobo" (rich French bohemian), among other things. This will not appeal to many, but fans of Green's previous feature, Son of Joseph (NYFF 2017; available on Netflix) will find it quite familiar.

JUST TO BE SURE/ÔTEZ-MOI D'UN DOUTE (Carine Tardieu 2017)

Potential lovers discover to their chagrin they may be half-siblings. A farce but staged realistically, with a charming cast headed by Cécile de France, François Damiens, and Guy Marchand.

This is an up-to-date example of why Hollywood has been known to steal rom-coms from the French and remake them Stateside.
