    A 2018 omission

In the Favorite Films section cinemabon just posted:
I wonder why "They shall not grow old" wasn't nominated for an Oscar? I believe its one of the greatest documentary films of all time.
    Colige suspe
Thanks for the heads up cinemabon on this interesting looking 2018 film which I missed. It has a Metascore of 91% and does seem an oversight by the Oscars committee.

    INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM nominations

    Czech Republic, THE PAINTED BIRD
    Estonia, TRUTH AND JUSTICE
    France, LES MISÉRABLES
    Hungary, THOSE WHO REMAINED
    North Macedonia, HONEYLAND
    Poland, CORPUS CHRISTI
    Russia, BEANPOLE
    Senegal, ATLANTICS
    South Korea, PARASITE
    Spain, PAIN AND GLORY
Haven't yet seen TRUTH AND JUSTICE, LES MISERABLES or THOSE WHO REMAINED. It looks like in the US, at least, PARASITE is the favorite. I have problems with it and would easily go insted for PAIN AND GLORY. I liked CORPOS CHRISTI, HONEYLAND and BEANPOLE. But there are reasons for considering CORPUS CHRISTI minor and BEANPOLE too depressing for the Academy and HONEYLAND is a documentary. Maybe in time THE PAINTED BIRD will be the one film writers remember, of the others. Of course PARASITE won at Cannes. . .

Peter Bradshaw's comments in the GUARDIAN on the Oscar nominations

I have a lot of sympathy for what Bradshaw says about the list, except that I don't like THE IRISHMAN. See: "Oscars 2020: shallow Joker squats on top of patchy and infuriating nominations" (Peter Bradshaw)

Agree that JOKER is shallow. Greta Gerwig should be included in more than Best Adapted Screenplay, and more black artists. Taron Egerton deserved mention, and it's "infuriating" that the Safdie brothers' breakthrough with Adam Sandler's amazing performance "did not make the cut." So sad for Sandler and josh and Benny. Failure to acknowledge Awkwafina will alienate Asian-Americans. And so on. Lupita Nyong.

Are they trying for another year of limited and exclusive selections? #OscarsSoWhite is flooding Twitter again.

    Snubs

    Some 2020 Oscar "Snubs"

    MIDSOMMER, UNCUT GEMS, FAREWELL

For more information see IndieWire's "27 Great Movies Completely Rejected by the Oscars in 2020" HERE.

The Farewell some thought was a major "snub," but it's an Amierican film, though shot in China in Chinese. Obviously Portrait of a Lady on Fire, the French film by Céline Sciamma, was excluded since France put forward Les Misérables as their candidate. I can't comment on any of these since I haven't seen them yet.

It's not entirely surprising that the rough-to-watch Uncut Gems, with its unappealing hero, was omitted from any award nominations. It is not a people-pleaser film. But it is a big shame that Adam Sandler won't get even mentioned for his career best performance as an actor. How painful is that!

Some other "snubs" mostly make sense to me, since I was not a fan of Booksmart, didn't like the sound of Her Smell, Midsommer is, after all, a horror movie. . . and there are always snubs. The worst is when the best picture Oscar goes to the wrong film, as with Brokeback Mountain losing to Crash in 2006 - an Academy mistake I can never forgive.

Analysis of the Oscar choices in Screen Daily HERE.
