    KALA AZAR (Janis Rafa 2010)

Greek docudrama follows a young couple who work as professional pet cremators or pet crematorium delivery people. There are also a lot of dogs around. And they also deliver balm for the muscles made from cactus juice. Some thing this evokes a post-apocalyptic sort of future. I wouldn't go that far. But the filmmaker shows a knack for adopting odd points of view.

    NEFI'S FATHER (Mamadou Dia 2019)

Senegalese drama set in a small town focused on two brothers, one the local imam, an upright but undiplomatic sort, and his brother, who has links with Islamic fundamentalists who are dangerous. The setting is vivid and convincing and the conflict is almost Shakespearean in its moment and complexity, but the drama and deliver of lines tend to falter at times. A number of awards at Locarno and elsewhere, however.

    NASIR (Arun Karthick 2020)

A gem-like little recreation of a short story by Dilip Kumar featuring a poor Muslim who works in a busy sari shop in the town of Coimbatore where a few years ago there was a wave of anti-Muslim riots. Nasir does not realize what danger he is in. . . The intimacy, crowding, and perhaps danger of the circumstances are all vividly conveyed by the use of almost-square aspect ratio, with rounded edges.

    THE FEVER/A FEBRE (Maya Da-Rin 2019)

Justino, an indigenous man from the Brazilian jungle, has long lived in Manaus and works as an industrial security guard but may suffer from a mysterious malaise. A mood piece by this former documentary filmmaker develops a thin plot with an impassive but monumental non-actor.

    LOS CONDUCTOS (Camilo Restrepo 2020)

Phantasmagoric tale of the escapee from a Colombian cult guilty of crimes and drugs who escapes and lives on the margins of society, in Medellin. Very impressionistic, art rather than realism. Won Best First Film at the Berlinale. Restrepo persuaded the one telling the story to play himself - or a version of himself.

METAMORPHOSIS OF BIRDS, THE/A METAMORPHOSE DOS PASSAROS (Catarina Vasconcelos 2020)

Gem-like essayistic family memoir in academy ratio with 16mm won the FIPRESCI Award for best feature in the festival's new Encounters section of the Berlinale this year.

THE DOVE AND THE WOLF/LA PALOMA Y EL LOBO (Carlos Lenin 2019)

A first film from Mexico(9debuted at Locarno) focused on a poor couple in a small town menaced by the cartels and their violence and troubled by a secret. The poverty and unhappiness are palpable. This is a kind of artistic miserabilism, but the young director has a very definite look and style, and won three main awards at the Mexican equivalent of the Oscars.
