I added an early talkie to the list: THE FRONT PAGE, the original (1931) adaptation of the play written by former reporters Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. Lewis Milestone directed. The book and the performances by an ensemble of actors playing Chicago reporters are the reasons to watch it of course (Adolph Menjou is awesome!). But the film boasts innovative cinematography and staging-in-depth too.
