RADIOGRAPH OF A FAMILY (Fiorouzeh Khosrovani 2021)

Growing up in a divided family during the Iranian revolution, which made me miss PERSEPOLIS with its lively self-interrogation. The filmmaker reconstructs her parents relationship, his liberalism, her militant Islamist takeover, through reconstructed photographs, invented scenes and staged dialogues, not realistically. The effect is stylish, but one is left with more questions than answers.

    SHORT VACATION (Kwon Min-pyo & Seo Han-sol 2021)

Four Korean junior high girls in the same class and photography club go out on the subway with plastic cameras seeking images of "the end of the world." Almost absolutely nothing happens but hanging out, which is the object: to tune in to the dial tone of teen life now.

    ____________

Somewhat surprisingly but gratifyingly, in a private review Mike D'Angelo rates this a for him enthusiastic 71/100 (May 26, 2021) and hopes it gets US distribution. That would be nice.

WE'RE ALL GOING TO THE FAIR (Jane Schoenbrun 2021)

Ostensibly a less melodramatic look at online obsessions and online obsessives. But the main character still comes off as pretty disturbed.

    LIBORIO (Nino Martinez Sosa 2021)

Film from the Dominican Republic about a legendary faith healer believed to have been transformed in a hurricane. It starts out on the wrong foot for me - with the hurricane, which lasts four minutes. Too much, too soon, and yet not enough, and what follows seems simplistic and as naïve as its characters. Lacks stylistic flair.

    NOUS (US) (Alice Diop 2021)

Despite her Senegalese parents, documentary filmmaker Alice Diop identifies as French. Filming the varieties of population along the RER B line that goes through and beyond Paris, she questions the idea of multicultural union, but is hopeful, saying, "'We' is what happens when 'I' opens up" and finding commonality with an older white French writer.

BEBIA, À MON SEUL DÉSIR (Juja Dobrachkous 2021)

Story of a f--cked up Georgian fashion model home for a funeral is overwhelmed by its own ambition. Everyone in this family is a jerk.

    STOP-ZEMLIA (Kateryna Gornostai 2021)

Young Ukrainian filmmaker has made a feature debut, using kids to play high school juniors often like themselves, to depict the year in the lives of four connected students, and various others. Very appealing work, but a little bland and not much new, and it raises some issues- bixexuality, PTSD, cutting, bullying and sexual harassment without any comment.

ALL THE LIGHT WE CAN SEE (Pablo Escoto Luna 2020)

Shot near the two volcanoes in Mexico, this is an amalgam of Mexican (and other) folkloric legends mainly focused on lost love and the search for eternal union. The director is 24 years old. I was out of my depth, though this reminded me a little of Eugène Green, a filmmaker it has taken me a while to get used to. Original title: Todo la Luz Que P:odemos Ver.

MOON, 66 QUESTIONS (Jacqueline Lentzou 2021)

Young woman reconciles with estranged dad by returning to Greece to be his caretaker. Tough to swallow, but bold and skillful physical acting of the dad's disability, if that works for you.

DESTELLO BRAVÍO/MIGHTY FLASH (Ainhoa Rodríguez 2021)

Stylish picture of Catholic hypocrisy, gender disparities in a dead-end Spanish town wanting to explode which the young people have all left. Go for the painterly images, stay for the rhythm of the dialogue

    GULL ( Kim Mi-jo 2020)

Powerful Korean film school film about a 60+ fishmarket vender, the family breadwinner, who is raped after a drunken evening. Never shows the assault, but focuses on how she got there and what happens after. The petite, vibrant Jeong Aehwa is memorable in the lead role.

EYIMOFE (THIS IS MY DESIRE) (Arie & Chuko Esiri 2020)

Two brothers from Lagos, Nigeria returned there after many years of studying and living in the UK, with a new concern and respect for their birthplace, and for their feature film debut present a dual drama of a man and a woman and their warm hearted trials and tribulations. A bit loose, but a great picture of the vibrant largest city in Africa.

    FAYA DAYI (Jessica Beshir 2021)

This beautiful, dreamy doc about khat in Ethiopia may be more than it deserves. It's being heaped with praise (and bought by Janus Films) but it is uninformative and too long. But she weaves a magic spell and will do so again.
