I Am a Comedian アイ アム ア コメディアン (Fumiari Hyuga 2022)
A documentary shot over a three-year period that includes the death of his father and the coming of COVID, follows the fortunes of prominent Japanese comedian Daisuke Miramoto, who gets cut from TV when he starts being bluntly political. His growing intimacy and emotional rawness cuts through the bonds of Japanese culture in fascinating ways and are a classic example of how a comic uses personal pain to make people laugh and connect.
Part of Japan Cuts, NYC, where it was shown Sat., Jul. 29, 2023, 3:30 pm.

WINNY (Yusaki Matsumoto 2023)
The case of Isuzu Kaneko, who endured seven years of trials for creation the p2p file-sharing software Winny. Legal procedural that grimly highlights Japan's cruel legal system and weaker sense of creative freedom.
Japan Cuts 2023: shown Wed., Aug. 2, 2023 at 9pm.

A FISH TALE さかなのこ (Shuichi Okita 2022)
A meandering, sui generis bio of a binary oddball person called Meebo who is obsessed by fish . They love to study them but they also love to eat them: go figure. The film is a little long, but it really takes the time to explore the winding path toward "celebrity ichthyologist" and the sprightly one-named actor Non is a good choice for the lead as an adult.
From Japan Cuts (Jul. 26-Aug. 6, 2023), probably the last to be added now.
