NEW YORK ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL (NYAFF)
Celebrating its 23rd edition in 2024, the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) is North America’s leading festival of Asian cinema. It was called “the best film festival in New York” by The Village Voice and “arguably the world’s best-curated program of new and classic Asian cinema” by IndieWire. Launched in 2002, the festival showcases a wildly diverse lineup of singular titles each year, ranging from mainstream blockbusters and art-house eccentricities to genre and cult classics. It was the first North American film festival to champion the works of Johnnie To, Bong Joon Ho, Park Chan-wook, Takashi Miike, and other auteurs of contemporary Asian cinema. Notable festival guests have included Lee Byung-hun, Ryoo Seung-wan, Masami Nagasawa, Sammo Hung, Lee Jung-jae, and Jackie Chan. Since 2010, NYAFF has been produced in collaboration with Film at Lincoln Center.

    BUSHIDO (Kazuya Shiraishi 2023)

Aside from occasional silliness and a bit too much Go-playing, this foray by Shiraishi into the world of Jidaigeki period samurai drama is stately and beautiful.

Bushido 碁盤斬り ("Gobangiri,""Go Board Cutting") , 129 mins., debuted May 1, 2024 at the Far East Festival in Udine, Italy. Screened as part of the NYAFF, showing Tuesday Jul 23, 8:15pm (Beatrice Theatre, SVA Theatre)

    CAREFREE DAYS (Liang Ming 2023)

Actor-turned-filmmaker Ming's novel-based sophomore picture about a young woman with life-threatening kidney failure and her journey with two friends is full of troubling realism, chaos, and energy. Perhaps a bit too much, but an exciting new talent whose complex, rich way of filling the screen made made me think of early Jia Zhang-ke.

Carefree Days 逍遥游 (Xiao yao you, "Carefree Journey"), 122 min., debuted Sept. 22, 2023 at San Sebastiαn. Screened for this review as part of the 2024 NYAFF.

    LOVE LIES (Ho Miu-ki 2023)

About a relationship on a dating app that is completely false, yet keeps getting closer and closer. A new, clever inversion of the rom-com. Veteran actress Sandra Ng and K-Pop star Cheung Tin-fu are brilliant in the leads, with a good supporting cast.
