First reviews.
THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG (Mohammad Rasoulof 2024)
Diirector prize at Cannes, and important for where it comes from, a brave and beleaghered Iranian filmmaker. Here, he skillfully depicts the conflicts of his country's theocratic society by focusing on a single family where the husband is on the verge of becoming a judge and the young daughters sympathize with the protesters in the street. The significance gets rather lost later in the film as it morphs into a thriller and puzzler.

THE BRUTALIST (Brady Corbet 2024)
This portrait of an emigré Hungarian émigré architect (Adrien Brody) and the American magnate he tangles with (Guy Pearce) - both impressive - is a fulfilment of the wild ambition Corbet showed from his debut THE CHILDHOOD OF A LEADER. Doesn't quite live up to models like CITIZEN KANE or THERE WILL BE BLOOD. But if you're longing for lost cinematic grandeur, this is for you.
Coming to the NYFF Sept. 28. Screening details: HERE.
